Do You Really Understand Velvet Fabrics? by qiansi fang

Velvet fabric is a kind of pile fabric. The surface of the pile fabric is fuzzy, like hair. They include velvet, velveteen, corduroy and terry cloth, to name a few. There are two types of pile fabrics made in two different ways.

Warp threads refer to threads that extend along the length of the fabric, while weft threads (also called weft threads) are horizontal threads woven through warp threads. The warp pile fabric has another set of warp yarns, and the weft pile fabric has another set of warp yarns. Both types of pile fabric have the same woven base fabric, but the additional warp yarns and filling pile yarns can create the fuzzy texture associated with velvet or corduroy. These pile yarns can be left in place like terry cloth (uncut pile tissue), or they can be cut pile like velvet (cut pile tissue).

In modern manufacturing, velvet is usually woven into double cloth. The warp threads are interwoven between two pieces of cloth. After the fabric is finished, a blade will be used to separate the two pieces of fabric along the warp. In this way, a soft cut pile fabric is formed. Stretch velvet uses the same double-layer fabric manufacturing process.

Pile fabrics have a variety of fiber content. The original velvet was made of silk, but in general fabric shops, rayon and synthetic fibers are the most common choices. Even the velvet marked with silk velvet is often velvet yarn based on rayon woven. Try to check the percentage of fiber content on the bolt label, or perform a burn test to better understand the fiber content.
