Basic Information:
  • Category 7/Category F (ISO/IEC 11801:2002) specifies fully shielded twisted pair cables with a frequency range of 1-600 MHz over 100 meters. It contains four individually shielded pairs in an overall shield, called shielded/foil twisted pair (S/FTP) or foil/foil twisted pair (F/FTP). There is a pending class Fa, based on using an S/FTP cable to 1000 MHz. It can support 10GBASE-T transmission.

For these two types of cables, each twisted pair is encapsulated in foil. In the S/FTP cable, all four pairs are wrapped in an overall metal braid. In F/FTP, four pairs are wrapped in foil.

FFTP CAT7 Cable's Category 7/Category F cable can be terminated with two interface designs specified in IEC 6063-7-7 and IEC 61076-3-104. One is the RJ-45 compatible GG-45 connector. The other is the more common TERA connector, which was introduced in 1999.

Category 7/Category F is backward compatible with traditional CAT6 and CAT5 cables, but its specifications for crosstalk and system noise are much stricter. Fully shielded cables actually eliminate crosstalk between pairs. In addition, the cable is noise resistant, which makes Category 7/F systems very suitable for high EMI areas, such as industrial and medical imaging facilities. Category 7/F cables can also improve safety by preventing data signals from being transmitted from the cable to nearby areas
