Piston pumps and piston pumps have two or three pistons or piston assemblies that can generate pump flow and pressure. These pumps are usually powered by electric motors, hydraulic motors, gas or diesel engines. The drive speed determines the specific flow rate of a specific pump. The pump should not be operated at a speed higher than the rated speed or pressure. Belt drive or direct drive can be used in many flow and pressure ranges.

The liquid temperature of most pumps is 140-160°F, but it can be adapted to 180-200°F for special applications. The pumped fluid must generally be clean soapy water or chemicals added to the pumped fluid before or after the pump.
